View Full Version : Are you a cabinetmaker or furniture-maker?
Hey, Guys. There is a difference. Namely the joints used.
I've still got the first piece of furniture that I ever made. A mahogany drop-leaf table built in eleventh grade. Complete with the cigarette burn from the first wife, (which happened later of course).
Show us the piece that you're proud of.
You home entertainment guys, did you build the center for that big screen or did you buy it?
I've got a buddy that built one that I guarantee will blow everyone away. Show us yours first. We don't want to break every-one's heart right away.
Al the best, Don

Okay, lets start by saying I’m not sure what I’m (cabinet or furniture maker). So someone tell me, I enclose the following.

Oak plant stand for the wife.

TV/HD cabinet for the front room. (maple)

Green and Green walnut plant stand for my son’s Christmas present.

Oak wall unit for the neighbor
Okay that should do.
Okay, CJ. I think I see some pinned tenon joints on both tables. We'll label you a furniture guy. Of course, a furniture guy can easily build cabinets as well.
Very nice projects, thanks for posting the pictures. Stick around and help some of the newbies get that good.

Unfinished tv stand. Ran out of room in the garage, started building the shop so brought it in & use unfinished. Still building shop (workbench project)

Probably notice the "top of my heart" in decorative face boards.

I'm both.:D
It's basically one big cabinet for my stereo equip.
The two top drawers pivot down for a roll-out turntable and cd player.
Center drawers are CD storage.

jcclack, I like that, have you got any more things to show use.
You guys are doing good work. Try this, if you take a picture of a specialty cabinet or piece of furniture, take another with some of the drawers and doors open to show the intended usage. That may give others ideas for CD or equipment storage, plus, it will show off even more of your talent.

Presently I'm building a 6 drawer dresser for my son that matches the
two endtables I showed earlier on this forum.
I'm about a week away from completion.
I've got lots of pictures for every step. I'm documenting everything.
I'm also completeing a full set of plans for anyone interested.
Enclosed is a sample, I can email PDF copies to anyone interested.
Most of the plans are to large to put here

Very nice work, Mark.:)
Hey, Mark - Well all I can say is wow! But, back to the picture problem. I think it's a quirk of your gallery software, I was able to link directly to two top pictures from your home page, the bottom picture I had to copy to my computer and upload to my private gallery, then link. (hope you don't mind) If you "edit" your pictures you will see the HTML of how it's done. You may want to take some of your choices and upload them out of the gallery to have them show up here - or just tell me which ones and I'll do it.
For those that have not visited Mark's site, I highly suggest it.

Hey Don,
Thanks for the pm giving me the heads up. What a surprise to find some of my pix added to my last post. Post posting. Anyway, thanks for kind words and thanks for the suggestions. When I had tried to post photos in the past, I was trying to take them from my flash drive. I didn't have internet at home until just a couple of weeks ago. I'll try again, and I'll try pulling them from my files.

Power to the 2x4 & plywood crowd!
This is my latest adaptation of grunge woodwacking. Notice the color arrangement; I worked hard to get the "sunset before dark" feeling. ;)

I wish I had the skill of you guys, but 2x4's are my friend. The darn's thing top-heavy, but it hasn't tipped over yet!

Okay, I think I may have the hang of this, now. This is the Greene & Greene adaptation I did. It's basically an entertainment center. The customer wanted the look of drawers, but ready access to the fronts of his components, most of which are housed within, on pull-out shelves. The one door in the first set of cabinets houses the reel-to-reel. This is all FSC certified cherry, with faceted walnut plugs. All of the finger joints were cut and sanded by hand. And yes, I even made the outlet covers out of cherry, and the wire-feed grommets (not shown) going down through the stone counters into the cabinets are walnut.

This last unit doesn't house any stereo components, but it is an integral part of the whole. It features a leopard wood tree, with curly maple canopy outline
overlaid across 3 glass doors. The entire tree is made up of numerous components, all of which were joined together with mortise & tenon joints. The tree's thickness is 3/8".
