As if my other projest isnt keeping me busy...
I belong to the local agricultural society and recently we have been working with the local new library. We have some older artifacts that are going to be placed in the libaray and they main display case is an old Tobacco case that was in a general store way back when in the Village. We decided I should refinish it before it is placed in the library.

I started today by dismanteling it all ready fro repairs and paint stripper. Amazingly there were only 9 screws holding it together, the rest were hooks and eyes. Early knock down furniture no doubt. It was going good until the last front panel when I broke the glass. As you can see the Glass was glued in with some type of black adhesive. Anyway, Ill keep this updated as I go along. Heres some pics to start.

Wow, that case has a lot of history on it in itself. Looks like a good project to fill your time out. Keep us posted on how you do it. Looks like it's got some paint on it here and there or is that "repair" work?

All the best, Don

Well I've gotten most of it stripped and hopefully tomorrow I can find time to do repairs to it. Needs a little glue here and there and the base is being reglued as well.

Don - Yes, this case has a lot of history, I beileve the paint on it is from surrounding floor paint and there was some other colours on the rest of the peice indicating that it was near a painted room. I beileve it has been repaired and modiied beofre for the shelf and the bottom, as they are a slightly different colour and have different fastners.

long awaited update...

Well it's all finished, just in the middle of assembly at the moment so I thought I'd post some pics, I apologize for the lack of "in progress" pics but I've been working on it in a rush so no time for pics.

Heres some of the layout/shop I was spraying in,

The peice of Turning was missing on the corner, so I evened up both sides using a straight peice of dowel, came out pretty good.
The Bottom moulding or trim is new, and thats the best I could match it, I suppose if I had of used tighter grained oak it would have hidden it better

Thanks Don, as for the shop it's my Dads (family farm)'s machine shop, so it was hard to get time in there and keep it clean! but it's got the air compressor for the spraying.
