Don,
I'm new to the forum and to wood working as well. I'm working on my first major project and have some questions. I'm using 270° non-mortise hinges. I'm putting 18" x 27" doors (3/4") on an armoire. First, how many hinges should I be using per door? Second, what size inset should I be using? I assume it should be 3/4".

Thanks.

Hey, Will. I guess since you are writing that you are using 270 degree hinges, this means that you are using european style 32mm cabinet door hinge. A door that size, out of the heaviest material (particle board) would only require a pair of hinges. You could use a pair and a half if you feel froggy. These hinges are usually adjustable in a big way, if you use three, make sure the adjustments aren't working against each other. As far as the inset, I guess you mean "overlay", 3/4 is typical but they do have backplates that allow for less - it all revolves around the design of your piece, not so much what is best. These are usually very good hinges, we've used thousands in the past - Grass, Blum and others.

All the best, Don
