hey guys! this is a chess board that I am building for my daughter. she went and joined the chess club at school and her birthday is next month. So I figured this would be the perfect gift. This is just the top of what will be a small end table. more to come.....

Very nice. A gift to last several liftimes.
A nice note on the underside will inhance it as a family heirloom.
I made 2 chess boards when I was in the military. Most bases have hobby shops & we played allot. Nothing this nice though.
Maple & walnut?
This warrants a larger picture.

Is that the cherry showing, just a little on the edge of the chess board?
Don't know what zircote is.
Demensions?
Bigger picture time

yeah Dave, that orangish red stripe is the cherry, it looks nothing like traditional cherry and it is VERY dense. One of the installers for the shop I work for gave it to me, it was a piece of flooring I still have enough to build a nice jewelry box too! hopefuly this bigger pic. will work. lesser quality but bigger picture....

here is a link to my Flikr acount where there are larger images to view. just click the image and then "all sizes" above the image to see large.

Thanks JB
That is just great workmanship. I'll have to get some tips from you when I get my shop set up & can start making one. That little red stripe really sets of the board to the frame. You got tallent in design and woodworking.
Some awsome photos, (some are kinda scary)

Hey, guys. Chess and checker boards are fun to make and not as hard as you might think. You simply edge-glue up your strips, then to to the saw and rip the board into exactly the same width as the strips, flip them over and then edge-glue again.

I bet Jason made his this way and he's wanting us to think he labored over it :D . . . Good job, Jason.

I wasn't looking at the checker board part. The trim & frame are the eye catchers.
You guys are a tough bunch to impress. Maybe I'll be that good some day.
For now though, I see the "Labor of LOVE" in making a nice project for a little princess.

Hey Jason, a chessboard is a very good heirloom gift. Great idea.

love building chessboards. Heck also love playing the game.

If you have a scroll saw, look up some 3-D chess piece patterns and make the pieces too.

Dagster has a new Lathe.
Maybe you can borrow it to make the pieces? It looks new.
A amall strip of the fancy cherry wood sandwiched between maple & walnut would make the set match the board.

haha! you know, I was surprised at how easy the checkerboard was to make. I don't think it took much longer than an hour! thats including dry time. I'm also building this thing in the shop where I work after hours so I think that makes things a little faster and easier
started on the legs today, got one done. THAT took more like almost two hours for one leg and I got three more to go! haha!

thanks for the kind words guys!

Have your buddy take some pictures as you work, post them to show us "newbees" some of your skills.

not a whole lot left on this project, but maybe I'll do that on the next one.:)
Kinda sounds like fun.

Got those legs sanded up today! and I must say I am pleased with the results. haven't really made legs like this before. I don't know what you would call them but kind of a take off on a cabriole leg.

tomorrow I will hopefuly get the apron done, friday the drawers. If I stay focused I could get done this week! that would be awsome.
