I just finished reading the book "The Workbench" by L Schleining.
I bought the book cause I'm planning a work bench. I live in Alaska.
I have a stack of 3/4 & 4/4 - 8' maple , Wild Cherry, Red oak & White oak boards (some 6/4 & a few 8/4 )I got from my Dad's sawmill in West Virginia about 12 years ago (he past away several years ago). I plan on making the top out of the maple & cherry, 2" thick. Lots of work to glue it all together but the wood is special and here in Alaska. After alot of research I plan on the Veritas twin screw vise on the end & Grizzley H7788 vise on the front.
I do mostly furniture, headboards, shadow boxes.

Some question are:
What is the size of the square dogs? (I was going to make the 3/4" X 1" holes, at a 3 deg angle, every 6" or so) I Could not find it in the book but noticed some square dogs for sale are 5/8" X 3/4".

Any advice on "Round" vs "Square" Dogs & the size of the square holes?

Do the dog holes in the vise face need to angle (3 deg) toward the table dogs?

I'll be cutting boards, ordering vises or plowing snow (till golf season starts) but will check in frequently.

Thanks
Dave

Hey, Bogy and welcome to the forum. Sounds like you are going to have a real nice bench. I built one about 20 years ago from yellow pine, the top is a full 3-1/2" thick. It's nice to have a heavy bench.

The problem with having a great bench is you are loath to beat, drill, hammer, nail, stain, etc. on it. I was broken hearted the first time I slid something across it and a fastener scratched it all the way across the grain. Well, I got over that and now I allow myself to finish nail jigs in place if I have to. Now it has the right woodworking "patina" that will make it a coveted garage sale item after I'm gone.

I'm sure other guys will chime in about your dog questions, I didn't put any in mine.

Keep posting on the forum and you will move from a "junior" member to a more seasoned member in no time. It's a post count thing.

All the best, Don

Hi Dave,

I didn't put bench dogs in my workbench either, so I can't help with that. Welcome to the forum, and to say a ditto on what Don said. When I built my main workbench for the shop I would be real careful about scratching and putting dents in it. Thank goodness that only lasted a day!

Good luck with your project and post pics when you get it done. :)
