Hey, my name is Matt. I'm from east Tennessee. I've always liked whittling, and screwing around with wood. Just recently though, I have discovered how much I actually enjoy making things with wood. I'm just getting started, so I'm still not very good, but each piece gets better. I have been making simple little things for now. I just finished an Australian bullroarer. I got bored at work one day and just started whittling on a pine 1x4. One thing led to another and I had me a bullroarer. I've been hooked since. I've made a few name plates, and address markers as gifts. But I just got a BEAUTIFUL piece of cocobolo and plan on making a one of a kind bullroarer. I also do woodburning, so most of my stuff has some burning incorporated in it. However I don't think I'll be burning the coco.

I just got a redwood board also. I plan on trying to make a small endtable. Hopefully my first piece of furniture will turn out nice. I'm also curious if anyone knows of any affordable, but good lathes. I'm kinda broke, (just bought a house) but I want a lathe so bad I can taste it. Or maybe thats just the toxic dust from the coco. Hahaha. Hope to hear from ya'll.

Thanks, Matt

Hey, Matt and welcome. Looks like you got that starting a thread thing figured out. Get us a picture of the bullroarer, I'd be interested in how one of those things works.

As far as lathes go - that's one machine that I haven't spent too much time on. I would imagine that as you get more expensive they get heavier and more solid, like anything else. Wood lathes are pretty simplistic which means that you should be able to find something in your price range just about anywhere. They should be pretty easy to rebuild as well so consider something used. Look in the local paper and ebay. Good luck and let us know what you decide on.

All the best, Don

Matt,

If you have a Craig's list in your area (craigslist.com. I see there are 5 in Tennessee.) I picked up an old Montgomery Ward lathe for $100 here in Portland Oregon. I have seen some nice ones for under $500.

Hey Matt. What part of East Tenn? I grew up in Bristol but live in Alanta now. I sure do miss East Tenn. sometimes. Most of my family still lives there so I come up from time to time.

FYI...I used to get a lot of wood at McClouds Lumber in Hampton Tenn. They have a dry kiln there so try to check it out if you live close to that area. They used to have a lot of Walnut and Cherry. Welcome to the forum.

Frank

Oh yeah...what's a bullroarer?

Thanks for the responses . I'll check on that lathe. I live near Oak Ridge, not really sure where Hampton is, but might be worth checking out. A bullroarer is the "Crocodile Dundee Phone" the wooden slat that is on a rope, you swing it through the air to make a loud buzzing sound. I like making them cuz they're easy, pretty, and unique. Everyone that comes to the house asks what they are, then everyone wants to go swing them around. Good fun.

Thanx all, Matt
